Critical Illness Cover
What is critical illness cover?
Critical illness cover can be purchased as a standalone policy or you can add it onto your standard life insurance policy.
It provides that extra level of protection should you fall ill or sustain an injury that prevents you from working.
What is covered by critical illness insurance?
Depending on your life insurance provider, you will be covered for specific illnesses and injuries according to their policy. When taking out a policy, or if you already have one in place, be sure to double check exactly what you are covered for, as providers tend to differ from each other.
Some examples of critical illnesses that could be covered by your policy include:
- Cancer
- Heart attacks
- Strokes
These three illnesses generally make up the majority of life insurance claims made, however, there are many more conditions and injuries that you may be covered for, including:
- Blindness or deafness (permanent)
- Organ failure
- Multiple sclerosis
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Loss of limb(S)
A critical illness policy can cover you for a wide range of illnesses and injuries, so it is vital that you check what those are and that you understand all the terms fully when taking out a policy.
At Unite Life, we can help find you the best life insurance policy suited to you and your needs, and if you already have a policy, we can review it to make sure you have the right amount of cover in place - we may even be able to find you a cheaper and better deal than you currently have!
Is it worth getting critical illness cover?
While it’s something we’d rather not think about, millions of people are injured and contract a critical illness every year. Worryingly, most of those do not have any cover in place.
By getting a CIC policy, you will get paid a pre-agreed lump sum in the event of you falling critically ill and being unable to work. Would you, or your family, be able to carry on paying the bills, mortgage, medical costs or other expenses if you no longer had an income?
A payout from your critical illness policy could be used to cover the cost of healthcare, treatment or even readjustments to your home. It is there to cover any expenses, leaving you time to deal with the illness or injury and focus on recovery, instead of being stressed and worried over your finances.
If you feel that you or your loved ones would struggle financially in the event of you becoming critically ill or suffering from a severe injury, critical illness insurance should definitely be considered.
